Defending Rob Sherman

You will have no doubt heard that atheist activist Rob Sherman, the man who got shouted at by Illinois State Rep Monique Davis for being an atheist, has been named as the “Worst Person in the World” by Keith Olberman:

Rob Sherman’s crime? Calling Monique Davis a “negro” on his website. Now I don’t admit to knowing all of black history, and coming from England, a place where blacks have had freedom for many many years now, I obviously don’t have much experience with racism. However, it seems to me that the term “negro” is not racist when used in a perfectly legititmate context, such as referring to the oppression of black people or “negroes”. Why else would an organisation exist called the “United Negro College Fund”? If “negro” is such a racist slur, why haven’t the UNCF been prosecuted?

It All Seemed So Promising…

2 days ago I mentioned that people had started making lists of “Stuff atheists like” to try and counter / challenge / parody a blog about “Stuff Christians Like“. It’s a good idea and I thought we could come up with some interesting results (being a bunch of intelligent rationalists afterall).

So here we are, a little over 48 hours later, and I’m beginning to eat my own words. An initial good start (with things like “talking snakes” and Pat Condell) has been reduced to people adding random links to blogs, Monty Python, and pictures of Charles Darwin with a laptop. Other things have been added which make sense but haven’t been expanded on, for example the post labeled “Books” which has a rather stupid “Example:” (as if we didn’t know what one was) and instead of a well known and popularized book like The God Delusion or The End of Faith, a book entitled “Soul Made Flesh” by Carl Zimmer is given. My apologies if I am too British to have ever heard of the book, let alone the author, but it just doesn’t seem to be giving the right vibe.

Where are all the posts on the Flying Spaghetti Monster, the invisible pink unicorn, evangelicals who like to threaten us with bananas, Evolution (and not just some picture of Darwin or something about computer chips), The Big Bang (y’know, that awesome theory that doesn’t require God).

Heck, I’d even go for something as simple as “Sunday mornings in bed”. I know quite a lot of people would tell me to send all these ideas to them, but to be honest I don’t see the point. The old things are still going to be there rendering the entire thing ridiculous. I’m even go to go out on a massive limb here and say that the “Stuff Christians Like” actually looks more sensible than the atheist one. I know I know, I’m sorry, but it doesn’t make it any less true. They have a load of full articles (not just random pictures I might add) which describe a load of things that Christians actually like. We have a joke. Yay for atheism…

A Quick Poll

I’ve recently installed a poll plugin for wordpress seeing as it may come in handy for the future. I may even start having weekly polls on various topics if it gets popular. Anyway, this post is really to test the feature out so I know how it works, and more importantly, if it works!

So, the simple question: Are you atheist, theist, or agnostic?

I get quite a few visitors to the blog, and some people leave comments suggesting they belong to certain religious groups, some not. This is an anonymous poll to see what percentages of people read the blog, that’s all.

Are you atheist, theist, or agnostic?
