I am on the list. Also, for those who aren't ready to tell people they don't believe in an invisible daddy in the sky because you live in the SE..... GET OVER IT. Otherwise your children will be just as cowardly as you.

I have lived in mississippi, texas, alabama, and georgia. Yeah, they aren't enlightened states per se, but if you are white (unless in Mobile maybe) you wont suffer an harm, and if you do, you help further our cause.

Hmmm, I've really started wondering which country is safer to live in as an atheist, UK or USA. I always thought of the UK as a secular nation even though we don't have any real "laws" promoting secularism, but there is a rise in fundamentalist Christianity at the moment. On the other side, we have the USA which does have secular laws and yet there are people who are still afraid to "come out" because of the attitudes towards them.

I was always comfortable being an atheist until I went to Idaho so I know what you're dealing with. I wasn't allowed to enter my girlfriend's friend's house because she was afraid her "godless" boyfriend would steal her stuff. Even in Washington I can't really talk about my lack of belief.

I'm with Oliver on the safety issue. Of course, I'm also fairly happy not to have a Facebook account.

Sadly, there are pockets of intolerance that make coming out as an atheist dangerous to some. Hang in there, Oliver.

As much as I would love to join that group, I am not prepared to out myself. "Oliver" is just a pen name and coming out atheist in Mississippi is not a safe venture at this point in history.

I've been reading the book "Why Drawin Matters". It's not even safe to say that I accept evolution in Mississippi.
