Atheist Blogs

Time for some blog promotion! I subscribe to quite a few atheist blogs in my feedreader (Liferea for all you Linux fans), and I thought I’d give you a summary of my favourite ones:

Friendly Atheist (http://friendlyatheist.com)

No atheist feed is complete without the blog of the “eBay atheist”. As the chair of the Secular Student Alliance, Hemant Mehta is a great person to add if you are in education and want someone who understands your view. He also seems to update his blog about 5 times a day, so make sure you don’t miss anything!

Atheist Revolution (http://www.atheistrev.com)

Now with a brand spanking new domain, Atheist Revolution is almost the opposite of Friendly Atheist. Whilst Hemant Mehta strives not to be overly offending to people of faith, vjack is openly critical of religion and belief in gods. If you like to read determined attacks on religion, read this blog! vjack has recently started a new feature called “Blogging Tips” which are aimed at new bloggers who want to make a good start to their blog.

The Atheist Jew (http://baconeatingatheistjew.blogspot.com)

As the author explains on his website, he is an atheist since he doesn’t believe in gods, but he is also a Jew since his mother was a Jew. It’s his heritage, not his religion. This blog is based in Canada so if you are Canadian it will keep you up to date with the national atheist information. The Atheist Jew, like Atheist Revolution is a great place to go if you want to see relgion / belief openly mocked.

Drunk in Ontario (http://mcshaggy.blogspot.com)

Another Canadian blog up next, and probably an undiscovered gem for many. “Father Shaggy” posts a new article at least once every day, and the majority of his writings consist of long, witty rants about religion. Surprisingly few people seem to comment which is a shame, but hopefully this might boost some numbers somewhere.

Debunking Christianity (http://debunkingchristianity.blogspot.com)

Who are the best people for debunking Christianity? Ex-Christians and ex-ministers of course, and this blog has a whole team of them. With a contribution team of 13 people, articles are never in short supply. One in particular (John Loftus) has written a successful book on why he rejected Christianity.

Pharyngula (http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula)

You may hate science, you may love it. Whatever your opinion of the subject, Pharyngula is a must read. Home of evolutionary biologist and atheist P.Z Myers, it is a great place to get information on scientific breakthroughs in biology, discuss religion and belief, and to participate in the regular online poll crashing events that always rally the thousands.

Atheist Media Blog (http://atheistmedia.blogspot.com)

If you could only subscribe to one blog, it would be Friendly Atheist. If you could add just one more, it would be the Atheist Media Blog. As the title suggests, this blog posts links and embedded content related to atheism. Media ranges from the popular Edward Current parody series on YouTube to full documentaries on Google Video. Combining the power of online media with the amazing ability to find a vast amount of content, Atheist Media Blog should be applauded in its dedication to providing videos for all atheists to enjoy.

Deep Thoughts (http://mojoey.blogspot.com)

The creator of the Atheist Blogroll keeps us updated with news on the blogroll, his life as an atheist, and (probably more common) news of priests who are being charged with sexual abuse. A great read for people who like hearing about justice finally being served, and proof that religion really does corrupt people.

Kieran Bennett (http://kieranbennett.com)

A relatively new blog, Kieren Bennett is an Australian atheist who I have featured on this blog a few times now. As well as the regular articles, Kieran writes long essay-style pieces on various topics suggested to him. So far we have been enlightened with “What works in deconverting Christians” and “Why atheist and NOT agnostic“.

So there you are. 9 atheist blogs that I would not do without in the atheist blogosphere. There are of course many more, and most can be found on the atheist blogroll, so go and pick your favourites!

Thanks for including me in this distinguished list. It really is quite an honor to be in company like this. Posts like this are good for all of us in the reality-based community, and we should probably all do more of them.
