George Carlin: 1937 - 2008

Comedian, actor, writer, and atheist George Carlin died yesterday at 5:55 pm in Los Angeles. I unfortunately had to find this out via a deeply insensitive comment someone made a few hours ago on a video post I put up in February. I’ve deleted the comment out of respect but I’m sure you can guess what it contained.

In answer to that comment, I would say that George Carlin was an extremely courageous man. He was a vicious advocate of freedom of speech, and he was convinced that gods didn’t make the tiniest bit of sense. Although we’ll never sure, I’m positive this was his attitude upon death.

I’d ask anyone who reads this and agrees with me to respect such a great and brilliant man with a few moments of thought.

If you are interested, CNN has a nice obituary on the genius of George Carlin.

Popular cartoon blog indexed has a nice post that sums up his impact on us all.

    1. Typo: viscous vicious. Not sure it’s the right word anyway.

    2. Better than thinking - I’ve been checking out YouTube videos of him.

    3. Not sure of your blog, so I will put it this way: I think he’d've preferred a vulgar and scatological encomium over silence, any day :)

My condolences to his family, friends, and fans.

I’ll miss you and your twisted, but thoughtful humor, as I’m sure many others will too. I mean, not that he would particularly appreciate my comment, but still!

    Rest in peace, man.

[...] The Atheist Blog comes word that George Carlin has passed. Mr. Carlin was, bar none, my absolute favorite comedian. [...]

    How do you explain this?

“I’ve deleted the comment out of respect but I’m sure you can guess what it contained.”

“He was a vicious advocate of freedom of speech,”

    Sam,

I do not consider “Hate Speech” a part of “Freedom of Speech”, and neither do many people. Out of respect for George Carlin I removed such a hateful comment.

I love freedom of speech, but I understand that there are many limits to it. The UK doesn’t allow Muslim clerics to preach hate against non-Muslims anymore than it allows Christians to do the same. There are some thing you really cannot say.
