I’m betting Makis believes the reason a person exists is god’s will or some other spiritual argument, rather than something simplistic in the real world.

We could have a side argument on whether in fact any of us really exists, or whether we just perceive ourselves to exist as indicated by our sensory inputs, which could in fact by artificial and synthesised.

Unfortunately you are confusing semantics. I want to be a father, but that isn’t alone going to get me a baby. At some point a sperm needs to join with an egg.

A) You forget that an atheist would not believe in the existance of a soul.

If you don’t believe in a soul, you probably don’t believe in life after death, or any of those religious constructs, or re-incarnation.

Therefore you assertation that the soul is fundamental to life decisions and purpose, is false to me. My mind within my brain makes my decisions, and once my body dies, my mind dies with it.

Is it true that I will live forever even if I don’t believe in a God? In which case I get the best of both worlds, if God does exist, I’ll apologise and eat humble pie, if not, no one will be any the wiser.

I beg to differ. The reason we are born is because a sperm and an egg join and produce a baby.

I also find it humourous that you think this single answer defines our IQ level.

I did not intend to imply that I thought we had a predefined purpose. Only that we as individuals may seek out a purpose to devout ourselves to.

That you think your existence has a predefined purpose indicates something about your thought process. It indicates that you’re not thinking but feeling/hoping/wishing or are just deluded.

Your existence is the result of a process not a the result of a reason/purpose. You exist because a sperm combined with an egg to form an embryo which eventually developed into you.

Your view of a “soul” is superstitious nonsense.

Please remember, when a body is created there is a soul created as well. In our lives we only consider the minor element very seriously, which is our body and is under a degradation process since is created. That means that we start corrode since we are enbrio.

On the other hand the other element has all the fundamental properties of life existence. Considering our souls when we make decissions and take actions in our lives is the way forward to understand the fundamental principles of human existence.

If 99% of the people answer differently from your own definition of the reason we are born, then maybe you should consider you are a 1% minority.

I agree with Ben - but don’t agree we have a purpose. We exist in the form we are given, and in time, leave no lasting impression upon the universe.

We are born because our parents either sought to procreate or because they ignored the possible consequences of their self gratification.

In my case, my Mom was seeking procreation, and my father self gratification.

My father is fond of saying, “I wanted your mother and you’re mother wanted babies” ;-)

Regarding points in life; our purpose is self defined. Although many are willing, and some eager, to allow others to define their purpose for them, I expect most individuals will be more constructive, productive, and happy if they embrace this responsibility for themselves.
