Jesus Week

Every year, Royal Holloway Christian Union have a week of events to spread the “good news” and generally lie, be smug, and utter absurdities. Today is day one, and I will be hopefully blogging the entire week, especially on Thursday after the aftermath of the debate (which I am going to crush them in). Here is a schedule:

How to hide bigotry with fancy friendly words.
How to hide bigotry with fancy friendly words.

I’m planning to attend all of it, but I am looking forward to today’s lecture on “why does God limit my sexuality”, which I read as “Why is God a homophobic racist bastard?”, and the “grill a Christian” evening which was great fun last year; I like my Christians medium to well done. Of course as I have mentioned, the highlight of the week is the debate my group are having, which should be fun since it is my first real debate. I can only hope they bring up Pascal’s wager or the argument from design, but if not, I’ll just strike them down with the help of my friend Logic.

Anyway, must dash. There is a foot of snow on the ground and for some reason I have regressed to a child and all I want to do is run around in it.

I noticed you can replace all uses of the word "free" on the flyer with "Jesus" and it makes just as much sense.

Good luck and I look forward to the reporting. :-)

    Good luck at the debate.

Is there any possibly way you could stick the debate up on YouTube or something? Pretty please? Pretty pretty please?

Is there any way you could record the debate and put it up on YouTube or something? Pretty please? Even if you just use a laptop with a cheap webcam or something, that would be awesome. In fact, even if you can only record audio, I'd love to hear it.

I'll see what I can do. No promises though!

  8. February 3rd, 2009 at 18:41 | #8

Please email the event coordinator right now! I don't want this turning into one of those "It was a cool idea, but we just sort of forgot to do anything until it was already too late" kind of things. I really want to see or hear this debate!

  9. February 3rd, 2009 at 19:17 | #9

My debating partner isn't so keen on the idea, and I'll have to respect his wishes. Sorry :(

  10. February 3rd, 2009 at 19:28 | #10

That's ridiculous. It's a public debate, isn't it? Is this a secret debate or something?

I'm actually a little angry now because I can't think of a single good reason for having a public debate and then not wanting people to see it. What is the point of it? Why should people like me who don't live near the event not be allowed to see the debate? Please ask that question on my behalf, because I really do want to see it.

Maybe they think you're going to edit the footage or something. Tell them that they can record and upload the video if they like. But seriously. Rawr. I'm hugely disappointed and frustrated right now.

I'm sorry you are upset, and I would really love for it to be filmed and put up for the world to see. However it is not my debate to organise, and the decision would be with the CU committee, as long as everyone debating agreed. Since not everyone agrees (and bear in mind that the guy who doesn't want to be filmed is on my debating side) we are stuck. I'll have a talk with Dan (my debating partner) but even if I were able to convince him I'd have to convince the two Christians as well.

Some good news though. Our student group had a meeting today to discuss various group projects, and further debates were a popular idea. If the RHSS ever organise a debate in the future, we will make sure to video it and upload it. :D

If Dan doesn't want people to see him debate, then why is he taking part in something like this at all? I just don't understand. I really hope you can convince him. Does he know that there are people like me who would really like to watch the debate, but can't because we don't live near the event? I'm genuinely interested in this stuff and want to learn more, and this is exactly the kind of thing that I want to see, and I feel like I'm being locked out without reason.

I realize it's not your fault, heh. You're just being respectful. But I still hope that you'll keep insisting on my behalf since I can't really do so myself obviously. Tell him about me! Carry my plea!

    Message reply from Dan:

I am very sorry that you feel shut out for no reason, it is absolutely not my intention to shut people out from anything. However, this is the first public debate I have ever participated in. I do not enjoy speaking in front of people, it is something I dislike intensely. It really doesn't help me if I know I am being broadcast to a potentially unlimited number of critical people who I don't know. If you really want to learn from a debate on this subject then I would suggest the dozens of amazing and far more professional debates done by Dawkins, Dennett, Harris and Hitchens.

    I think that settles that.

  14. February 4th, 2009 at 01:25 | #14

Well, that doesn't really make me feel any less intentionally shut out, but it doesn't sound like there's any way to change his mind. Not too much to be done then. Alright. I won't argue. I'll stop begging.

Oh, and I appreciate his suggestion to watch other videos, but I was sort of looking forward to seeing the one and only Atheist Blogger in action, heh.

The best I can do is get someone to take photos :P

Heh heh, sure, that could be fun. And then maybe we could have a caption contest or something silly like that. :P

All that hatred, and God still blesses you with pretty pure white snow! My he's amazing, and he still forgives you Adrian.

  19. February 8th, 2009 at 19:20 | #19

That's good. It means I can keep insulting him. I love how people like you always talk of "hatred", when it's really mockery of an idea. You can't hate what you don't believe exists.

  20. July 24th, 2009 at 13:12 | #20

Keep up the good work Adrian. From a senior citizen I feel that I can leave the future to students as you and others to put this world to rights and stop all this hatred that religion inspires.
I believe that open debates are fine but I am afraid that religion incites some to disrupte meetings in stead of trying to learn.from them.
