Ray Comfort tried very hard to show that atheists are unreasonable but inadvertently highlighted the same method Creationists use to try and disprove Evolution. Ray claimed that atheists simply do not like the idea of Hell and therefore do not believe in it. He then goes on to say that we use this kind of logic on God as well. We (apparently) don’t like the idea of God and so choose not to believe in it.

You could carry this further if you didn’t like gravity, history, the wind or love. Those things can’t be seen, and therefore wouldn’t exist if you didn’t believe in them either. Anything that you don’t like will not exist if you just say that you don’t believe in it.

Before I continue it should be stated quite clearly that the reason atheists do not believe in God or Hell has nothing to do with not liking either. In fact, my disbelief in Hell came as a direct consequence of my disbelief in God. I do not believe in God for multiple reasons, none of which are simply because I “don’t like the idea”.

Secondly, whilst Ray is quite correct that gravity, history, wind, and love cannot be seen (although given his past allusions about sight I have no idea how he came to this correct conclusion), he fails to mention that such things can be observed and tested based on their interactions with the rest of the universe. History is the one exception because it is simply the human expression for what has happened in the past, but this can too be observed by its affect on the present.

What is really striking is Ray’s last sentence. Anything that you don’t like will not exist if you just say that you don’t believe in it. Ray reckons this is exactly how atheists live their life. I wasn’t too concerned with his ridiculous argument though. I was more wrapped up in the obvious irony of such a statement.

As a Creationist, Ray Comfort subscribes to the same idiotic idea that he is trying to oppose above. Namely, that they do not like Evolution (it goes against the Bible) so they say they don’t believe it in, and they reckon that is a good enough argument to refute it. They don’t look at the evidence, and simply use the same arguments over and over, even though they have been refuted so many times by science.

It seems that a lot of talk has been going on about Patrick Greene, especially since Ray Comfort mocked him on his blog, and he started emailing (and phoned into) The Atheist Experience. In case any of you have not been following the story, Patrick is attempting to sue Ray’s evangelical company “Living Waters” for selling an offensive bumper sticker.

The sticker in question says “National Atheist’s Day” in large red letters, then “April 1″, and the quotes the Bible “The FOOL has said in his heart, There is no God” (Psalm 14:1). Here is a small thumbnail to help you visualize it:

Now, there are many reasons I believe people can get offended by certain beliefs. I’ve written how I am offended when people tell me I’m going to Hell, not because to them it is “fact” (as Patrick Greene argues), but because they believe that such a punishment is justified, and they are willing to compare me as equal to murderers and rapists. I am offended by the threat of Hell for the same reasons I am offended when someone calls me a bastard. It is a personal attack, aimed and directed quite thoroughly.

Who says atheists cannot organize themselves? A group of atheist bloggers who debunk everything Ray Comfort says (Raytractors) have organized a strike of his blog. I’ve joined their group as a contributor, so hopefully there will be some posts debunking Ray from me as well, after all I have done them in the past.

Ray Comfort rules his blog like a dictator. Every comment goes through a moderation phase before being displayed, and any comment that contains vulgar language or doesn’t capitalize “god” and “jesus” is removed. Repeat offenders are blocked. He calls his website “Atheist Central”

Due to this behaviour, and Ray’s continual ignorance in science, Raytractors has declared a strike for all atheist commentators of the blog. The aim of the strike is to see what happens to the blog when it is pretty much devoid of all life, since it is evident that Ray has more atheist “followers” than theist ones, mainly because of the absurdities of his beliefs. The rules of the strike are quite simple. You can visit Ray’s blog as many times as you want, but you cannot post a comment. Instead, why not write your comment as a blog post if you have a blog, or send in your comment to an atheist blog you read. I would be willing to post any comments you want to make about Ray Comfort right here.

Ray Comfort’s blog has been around since October 2007 (according to the site), but I’ve only been a subscriber for the past 3 months or so. In that time, the blog title has changed twice.

At the time I joined his readership, his blog was called “Comfort Food” which I thought was quite witty of him. His name is Comfort and he is giving out “digestible” bites of information about Christianity that would probably comfort his Christian readership. However, as Ray began to attack atheism more, he claimed

…the name “Comfort Food” by itself gave the impression that this is a cozy corner for Christian fun, food, and fellowship. However, a quick look at the comments and it’s clear that it’s not. Some have been shocked and others have been discouraged by what they see as fighting. There really is a battle going on in there (see Ephesians 6:12-20). Hence, the name change.

So…arming himself for the war against atheists, he changed the name of the blog to “The Soapbox“, arguing that a soapbox is something one stands on to make a speech and vent frustrations. Many people have noted that the modern version of the soapbox is indeed the blog, so the reference went hand in hand. Comfort was preaching from his soapbox to the unconverted atheist crowd.

Ray Comfort was feeling particularly lazy today, and so instead of making up a new branches of science or claiming he looks like Einstein, he just wrote a title and said “bugger it” to the actual article. The title is a quote, so it’s not even his own work. I think that’s a little too lazy.

Anyway, to make Ray look more of an idiot, I’ll write an article for him. The quote was from Plato, and simply said:

No one ever dies an atheist

This is an obvious attempt to provoke the old “there are no atheists in foxholes” argument, something that has been thoroughly debunked by the number of atheists in the military. Such a preposterous quote as the one above can be debunked quite easily though.

Seeing as the last thoughts going though a dying person’s head are their own, and nobody else can even imagine what they are thinking, this argument is already pretty weak. Even if an atheist says “I believe in God” at the end of his/her life, that doesn’t mean they truly believe it. Since the person is completely dead after their “last thought”, there is no way for them to verify their final belief, so not only is Plato’s argument weak, it is both scientifically and factually invalid.

Perhaps the most humorous thing about this argument is that it is easily reversible, and because of the above properties, nobody can argue against me when I claim:

No one ever dies a theist

Go on, prove that every single person who has ever died has not converted to atheism at the last possible chance. What’s that? You can’t? Don’t use pathetic arguments then.
